Charity Work

We strongly value our links with the local and global community and our student body raise, on average, over £30,000 each academic year for worthy causes.

Across the whole school, each house is responsible for organising its own charity events to raise funds for local, national and international causes of their choice.

Recent charities have included: , , , and and local food banks.

Community Work

In addition to raising money for good causes, our pupils are encouraged to take part in hands-on local community work. Some of our Senior School and Sixth Form students also take part in trips to take part in community work overseas.

Community Work Overseas

Hurst organises a regular trip to Zambia, Africa where a group of Senior and Sixth Form students help to support . This project (which has incorporated the Itala Foundation School in Mkushi) was set up in memory of a former Hurst pupil and has gone on to built an orphanage, nursery school and developed a primary school.

In the ¹ú²úÑÇÖÞ¾«Æ·¸£Àû School, we have set up a link with a school in Sri Lanka. Every week our pupils have the opportunity to speak, via video call, to these children in Sri Lanka to learn first hand about their school and culture.

Local Community Work

On Tuesday afternoons, some of our Senior School pupils go out to local primary schools to help younger children with their reading. Hurst pupils are also involved in Drama and Music outreach projects, and others go to local churches and scout clubs to help with their site maintenance.

Many of our Fifth Formers (Year 11s) and Sixth Formers work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, which includes taking part in our Community Service programme.

The Hurst minibus fleet has also been used to support a number of organisations.

Community Action Day

In the Summer Term all pupils across the College take part in a Community Action Day.

Senior School pupils go out into the community to local charities, schools, churches, care homes, sports clubs and community organisations to help out for the day. They take part in practical ways such as gardening, weeding, painting, washing windows and reading with younger children. We also host pupils from Woodlands Meed school in Burgess Hill for a range of projects, including Art, DT, STEM, Performing Arts and sports.

Pupils in the ¹ú²úÑÇÖÞ¾«Æ·¸£Àû and Senior Prep take part a variety of onsite and offsite projects on their own Community Action Days, including facilitating an ‘Olympics’ event for local primary schools, as well as support to churches and community organisations.

Spiritual Life at Hurst

At Hurst, we believe that spiritual growth is an essential part of each pupil’s overall growth and development. and we aim to encourage and grow the faith of pupils, staff and parents alike.

By virtue of its foundation as a Woodard School, the history of Hurstpierpoint College is steeped in the idea of spiritual nurture and growth. While traditionally Christian in outlook, the College is not limited to this perspective. In fact, as a Chaplaincy we welcome pupils of all faiths, as well as those who have decided that affiliation to a particular faith or denomination is not for them. The expectation at Hurst is that everyone will give themselves, and those around them, the opportunity to explore new ideas and horizons.

The Chaplaincy offer weekly activities for pupils, which ranges from Light Lunch in Chapel, break time prayers in houses, House Communions and Christian Forum groups. The Chapel is open daily for pupils to come in and enjoy some quiet reflection.

Chapel Services

Hurst’s chapel services form a regular part of the weekly school timetable. They form a vital opportunity for the school community to come together in one place to share in the successes, joys and occasional anxieties of the week gone by. ‘Chapel’ is a time for pupils to experience a range of services, which occasionally include representations of other faiths. In addition, there are occasional services of Sung Compline and the Eucharist, such as on Ash Wednesday and Ascension Day.

Remembrance Day

The College is active in supporting Remembrance Day every November. A special Remembrance Service is held as a tribute to the 108 Hurst boys and four members of staff who lost their lives during the First World War, the 75 men and boys who lost their lives during the Second World War and the 10 members of our community who have died in war or armed conflict since then.

Hurst has an online war memorial record, Hurst at War, which is available to view online atÌý.
