Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

Girls in red T-shirts dancingAt Hurst we strive to create a warm and supportive environment where every pupil feels welcomed, respected and valued for who they are. We work in a co-educational environment and celebrate diversity in order to enhance mutual respect and understanding.

EDI principles

The culture at Hurst is based on our EDI principles:

Equity

  • The fair and respectful treatment of all people.
  • The creation of opportunities and reduction of disparities in opportunities and outcomes for all staff and pupils.

Diversity

  • Recognising and respecting everyone’s unique qualities and attributes.
  • Recognising and celebrating differences as strengths, not limitations.

Inclusion

  • Creating a welcoming environment where all feel valued, respected and represented.
  • Ensuring that no individual feels excluded from any area of Hurst life.

EDI groups

Hurst runs a number of co-curricular EDI focused groups, which are combined groups for pupils and staff, to enable the best possible collaboration and diversity. These groups are popular and have grown every year since the formation of the initial EDI group in 2020. Each group under the EDI banner has a specific focus.

  • Disability Awareness Network
  • Racial Inclusivity
  • READI (Rainbow Education Alliance of Diverse Individuals) – an LGBTQIA+ group
  • Prep School Ambassadors

These Hurst EDI groups have organised numerous events in College including:

  • Black History Month – integrated into school lessons
  • Disability Awareness Week – with visiting speakers
  • International Women’s Day – with pupil pledges and collections of period products for charities/Food Banks
  • Mental Health Awareness Week
  • Pride History Month
  • Visiting speakers events

Wellbeing

At Hurst we believe that mental health and wellbeing is the basis for a happy and successful life at school and beyond. Pupil and staff wellbeing is at the core of what we do at Hurst and informs our decision-making at every level.

For this reason we have a dedicated Director of Staff and Pupil Wellbeing who works closely with pastoral leaders and all other staff across the college.

Through our embedded and integrated wellbeing programme we seek to offer opportunities for all of our community to succeed, whilst providing them with the support they need along the way. This pre-emptive approach to developing resilience helps everyone at Hurst to fulfil their potential. From being the first school to offer the unique Mind Clinic service to all staff, to ensuring pupils throughout the school spend time in our forest and on the college farm, we believe that this community-focused approach has contributed to Hurst’s recent and ongoing success.

To ensure success in our drive to support all members of our community, we are proud to work closely with a number of organisations.

Wellbeing Champions

Hurst has implemented Lower Sixth Wellbeing Champions as a way to further support pupils. This student team works alongside the the Chaplain and Deputy Head Pastoral to raise awareness of what ‘wellbeing’ is, and what steps we, as a whole school community, can take to promote wellbeing in all areas of Hurst life.

The Wellbeing Champions take part in a training day run by an external instructor from Mental Health First Aid England. In their course they learn about various mental health issues that can affect young people. They are briefed on, and discuss, ways of helping and supporting their peers. On successfully completing their course, the team are officially recognised as ‘Mental Health First Aid Champions’.

Wellbeing Day

Hurst recognises World Mental Health Day by holding a Wellbeing Day in the Sixth Form. The day is designed to engage students in activities which should rejuvenate and de-stress the students and helps them to embrace mindfulness and relaxation techniques which they may wish to use as they approach important, and sometimes stressful, stages in their educational journey and beyond.
