A group of Shell and Remove Academic Award Holders enjoyed an inspiring and immersive day at Oxford University, gaining first-hand insight into university life,Ìýcutting edgeÌýresearch, and the study of Material Sciences.Ìý

The pupils were warmly welcomed by the University’s Materials Department, where they took part in aÌýhands-onÌýlaboratory workshop. Under the guidance of university staff, they completed a practical activity undertaken byÌýfirst yearÌýundergraduates, examining a range of metals and alloys under different microscopes. Through this, they explored how altering the properties of metals enables their use in everyday applications.Ìý

Following the workshop, pupils attended an engaging lecture delivered by Dr Jenkins, a leading professor in the field. He introduced the fundamentals of Material Science and highlighted its vital role in improving human life,ÌýtechnologyÌýand global infrastructure. Dr Jenkins also shared insights into his current research, which focuses on developing materials that resist brittleness over time—an innovation with the potential to enhance the safety and economic viability of nuclear powerplants.Ìý

After a break to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Oxford University Parks, the group attended an admissions talk outlining the application process for highly selective universities. Pupils asked thoughtful questions and gained valuable clarity on what makes a strong application.Ìý

The day concluded with a guided tour of Wadham College, led by current undergraduate students who offered an authentic perspective on studying and living at Oxford. Their insights into college life further enriched the pupils’ understanding of the academic and social opportunities available.Ìý

The visit proved both enriching and motivating, giving scholars much to consider as they begin to plan their future university pathways. The day offered not only academic inspiration but also a memorable glimpse into one of the world’s most renowned universities.Ìý
